Structural and Optical Characterization of Ho Doped BaTiO3 Ceramics by sol-gel method

| Commentaire | : | Barium titanate (BaTiO3) is a perovskite crystal structure and it is well known to have many potential applications in microelectronic industry due to its high capabilities to enhance the performance of the capacitors and other energy storage devices. Multiferroic materials possessing ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties have attracted considerable interest due to their remarkable multifunctional and physical properties for potential applications in information technologies, radioelectronic, optoelectronic, micro-electronic and spintronic devices. In this work, we studied the structural and optical properties of pure BaTiO3 and Ho doped Barium titanate (Ba1-xHoxTiO3 with x = 0.00; 0.0025; 0.005 0.0075; 0.01; 0.015 and 0.02). The samples, were prepared through the sol-gel process and characterized by a plethora of techniques including, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) , Raman spectroscopy and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We have also measured the optical properties using Ultraviolet–Visible (UV–Vis) transmittance-reflectance spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of the prepared powders, calcined at 1000 °C for 4 hours, revealed their crystallization in the pure perovskite structure without the presence of secondary phases. We show as well that that Ho may occupy both Ba and Ti crystallographic sites . Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed a regular morphology of the grains with an average grain size increasing as the Ho content increases in the BaTiO3 pure phase. Raman and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) analyses have given results in accordance with those obtained from XRD and SEM characterizations. The values of the bandgap energies for the doped samples are lower than those of the pure BaTiO3 value (3.256 eV), thus confirming energy softening effect of Ho. |
